The Liberatory Health Initiative
Transformative justice is possible through targeting the social determinants of health that support community well-being.
No Entry is the Best Reentry
Born from this simple idea, ILARJ introduced the Liberatory Health Initiative as a new reentry framework rooted in the social determinants of health and providing holistic, family-centered support at the earliest possible stage. ILARJ not only integrates incarcerated individuals into the broader ecosystem, but directly engages them as volunteers, leaders, paid peer educators, and as future team members.
This initiative is also building the foundation for new systems of care and accountability—structures and practices that begin within prison walls and extend beyond them, fostering sustained support and transformation.
On any given day, about
30,000 people
are in IL State Prisons.
Success Plan
The Success Plan program provides a structured, values-driven framework for personal healing, accountability, and readiness for reunification. By addressing all nine social determinants of health and integrating conflict resolution practices rooted in transformative and restorative justice, participants build Success Plans that reflect tangible growth and a commitment to community well-being.
As part of this program, ILARJ also hosts community workshop events and provides information on resources for people in the Cook County area.
These workshops engage community members in how you can activate your power to overcome the social determinants of health that impact your day-to-day life. Explore our resources and activate your power.
Follow our socials or subscribe to our newsletter for more information on when these workshops will be available.
Liberatory Health Fellowship Program
Starting in February 2026, we launched the Liberatory Health Fellowship Program for currently incarcerated individuals to develop key community leadership skills from across the walls. Each month, up to 10 paid fellows who have completed a Success Plan are invited to join us, where we support their development through structured lessons and a capstone project that addresses the social determinants of health within the carceral space or their home communities.
We provide guidance that activates leadership potential and inspires innovative approaches to community well-being.
